Sidewalk Mosaic Project

What is this Project About?

The OEV Dundas Mosaic Project project was done in partnership with the Clayworx, City of London and the Old East Village Business Improvement Area.  In 2020, all partners met to discuss an opportunity to include public art beautification into the major infrastructure project to upgrade Dundas St in Old East Village taking place from 2020-2022.  Our collaborative work resulted in a three phase beautification mosaic project on Dundas Street between Rectory Street and Adelaide.

Each partner brought a necessary element to the process.  The City of London provided the needed funding and engineering support, the OEV Business Improvement Area liaised with the City and identified area 10 community partners who have played a part in the Old East VIllage Revitalization efforts participate in creating mosaic tiles.  Clayworx hired the artist and team to design, work with the community and create and install the public art.  Clayworx infrastructure, experience and skill was essential to the success of the project.

As with many of the other Clayworx led mosaic projects, there was community involvement baked into the process.  10 OEV community groups decorated tiles using the lens of what the community means to them and a bit about their organization within the context of OEV.   The 10 sidewalk tiles are complete and the three vertical elements will be installed in the fall of 2025.

Artist Team: Beth Turnbull-Morrish, Lead Artist and Designer, Cassandra Robinson, Production Lead and Sadie Wasylko, Installation support.

Thanks to Beth Turnbull-Morrish's design work, the square tiles bordering the mosaics are reflections of various architectural features in the neighborhood. Some of those features are also reflected in the ‘Elizabeth Way Finding Mosaic.’ Taking inspiration from the City of London’s tree logo.

Each square’s colour scheme speaks to the next:
Background colour of one square was the main colour of the previous one
Corner colour is the main colour of the next square

Each square is made up of exactly 157 tiles, totaling 1570 tiles installed across the 100 square feet of all the locations.
