Embassy Commons - Indwell Mosaic project

Embassy Commons - Indwell Mosaic project

Clayworx and Indwell Community Homes share a vision for Old East Village as a vibrant, welcoming community for all of its residents. Before building its affordable housing complex at 744 Dundas Street (“Embassy Commons”), Indwell entered into a partnership with us to create and install three large mosaic panels on the exterior of the  building. We contracted artist Beth Turnbull Morrish as Mosaic Art Director to conceive the design, oversee tile production, and install over 12,000 hand made tiles along with her intrepid crew. Installation was completed in the summer of 2022.

Check out this amazing video created by Indwell talking about how all the artwork is integrated into the building! CLICK HERE

Design concept, Beth Turnbull Morrish

The design concept was inspired through a charette held at Clayworx; it embodies the thoughts and feelings of Indwell residents and staff who participated that day. Two panels face Dundas Street and the third can be viewed from English Street.  Left to right, the first panel represents Dawn and the feeling of hope associated with starting a new path. The middle and third panels respectively signify Love and Thriving, and Belonging and Safety. The middle panel features the forks of the Antler River, a.k.a. the Thames; its orientation matches that of the actual river that flows through the heart of our city. Earth and roots signify the many hardships we grow through, while the spectrum of colours of Ontario wildflowers represent love for all people.
