Classes fill up quickly!


​We offer classes year round in handbuilding, wheel-throwing and combo (mix of the two) for people of all ages, from beginner to advanced. Our classes are taught by amazing artist-educators, including our Artists in Residence. In addition to instruction, registration fees include 1 sleeve of clay, glazes and firings. Bring your own tools or purchase at time of registration (an option in the dropdown menu) or in the Clayworx store. 
Members of Clayworx receive discounts on classes. 

Beginner - little or no previous experience - getting the basics down (centering is still a matter of luck)
​Level 1 - have basic skills, looking to improve or be consistent (can centre clay most or sometimes)
Level 2 - no longer need help with the basics (can centre and create shapes without help)
*We separate classes into levels to make it easier on the instructors, not complicate your life. If you're not sure where you fit - call us!

WHeel throwing - Beginner     FULL                                                                                                        Adult
Experience a fun and broad introduction to throwing on the potter’s wheel. Learn the skills necessary to throw cylinders, cups, bowls and more in this exciting introduction to throwing fundamentals. Your instructor guides you through the process of throwing, shaping and trimming pots on the wheel.  Basic surface decoration and glazing techniques are also demonstrated. This class is designed for students with little or no experience on the potter’s wheel. Classes are 8 or 9 weeks.

WHEEL Throwing - level 1          FULL                                                                                                        Adult  
Already have some basic knowledge of the wheel and looking to improve your throwing skills? This class is for you! Practice and refine simple forms and explore more complex shapes.  Focus on learning or improving your wheel fundamentals - centering, opening, widening, stretching and shaping. Finish your work with an introduction to slips and glazing. Various methods of surface decoration and glazing are also explored or expanded upon depending on your skill level.  Classes are 8 or 9 weeks long.

Introduction to handbuilding        FULL                                                                                            ADULT
The oldest techniques in pottery are handbuilding. You will explore what you can create with your hands through coiling, slab building and press molding.  This class will conclude with the glazing and decorating of your unique clay creations.  Have a project in mind? Bring photos or sketches! Open to all levels. 9 weeks.

Handbuilding or Wheel-throwing

This Level 2 class is designed to give the participant a range of options with which to decorate their pottery. Whether the student wishes to pursue a sense of narrative or create beautiful patterns, this course will explore a host of techniques to accomplish this. Everything from carving, slip decorating techniques, glaze combinations, over-glaze brushwork, and lustre ware will be explored. Each class will be comprised of demonstration and hands on learning.  The c
lass is for students who are already competent with clay productions. No tools required.

handbuilding - SCUlpture      FULL                                                                                                          ADULT
Learn to handbuild sculptural and/or decorative pieces. You will learn a variety of techniques and tricks, which will be useful to a complete beginner as well as to an advanced student. You will be able to work on projects of your own choosing and learn at your own pace under the guidance of the instructor. Feel free to bring images of what you'd like to make!  ​This class is 9 weeks long. No tools required.

   * NEW *                                      Wheel throwing - Beginner                                                              ADULT
You will be introduced to the basics on the potter’s wheel  It will conclude with the glazing and decorating of your unique clay creations. Skill Level: All Levels  Class is 9 weeks long.

Glazing Techniques                                                                                                                                      ADULT
For this intermediate level course, time is shared between making and decorating. You will be introduced to glaze chemistry and calculation theory, application techniques, layering, glaze test tiles, and glaze combinations. This is a very hands-on class with much time spent experimenting and testing.

Students will leave with knowledge and tools to continue exploration on their own, or lead to an advanced level course. Concentration will be on 3 forms the plate, the bowl and the mug which can be thrown or handbuilt, based on student’s preference. Handbuilding or Wheel-throwing.

TEENS in CLAY - All skill levels       1 spot left!                                                                                  TEENS
Socialize and learn! Creative teens (12-16) with any level of experience will gain skills building with slabs, coils, and pinch pots, as well as throwing on the potter's wheel. This is a great opportunity to explore ideas and meet new friends. All the pieces you make will be decorated and glazed using a variety of techniques.

ADVENTURES in clay 1       FULL                                                                                                                      KIDS
For the creative young potter, either new to pottery or refining skills, who will use basic pottery techniques (pinching, coiling, and slab construction), to make both functional and artistic creations. One week will be spent “playing in the mud” as we try out the potter’s wheel. Students will decorate and glaze their final projects and finish up the session with clay games. Materials included.  All skill levels

ADVENTURES IN CLAY 2       FULL                                                                                                                      KIDS
For the older student who competently uses basic pottery techniques and is ready to combine them in creative new projects. Extra wheel time will be offered, along with more advanced projects and exposure to new forms of pot decoration. As students are expected to work more independently, they will be invited to bring in images to try. Materials included.  Skill Level: At least 3 previous pottery sessions and/or camps, and willingness for independent work.

Family COMBO class - All Skill levels        FULL                                                                                FAMILY
Appropriate for all ages with Adult
This class is fun for both parent and child. Working at your own levels, create pieces using hand-building techniques including pinch pots, coils and slabs, and also try out the potter’s wheel. Connect over clay while creating together!  This class is 8 weeks long and is suitable for all skill levels.
